How The Bipolar Spouse Copes

By Laura Collins

Bipolar disorder is something that can leave one feeling fearful, depressed, withdrawn and manic. It is something that can affect you your entire life. However, there is treatment available. Unfortunately, this is a slow process and there are still times when people have their ups and downs. For the bipolar spouse, they especially will have trouble dealing with their partner.

It can be very difficult for the spouse when someone has just been diagnosed because they will be confused by this change in behavior. Sometimes the person will be excited and often manic and the next day, they will be depressed and withdrawn. The spouse will take a lot of strain and feel that it is too much for them. It can lead to a breakup in many cases.

It can also produce a lot of anxiety for the spouse because this will always be on their mind. They will feel as if they are not able to enjoy their own life. It is important to have space of their own. They need to have friends. They need to have support and guidance. They need to have friends to talk to. They need to be able to do the things that they enjoy doing. However, it can bring them down.

In order to live a successful marriage, both husband and wife will need counseling. They need to know how to work through the tough times. There are experienced counselors that can help with this. They are specialized in this area. They often work practically by helping the couple come up with a schedule or a routine. However, one also needs to know what to do during the tough times.

Often the spouse will become depressed as well. They need to learn more about the disorder and understand what their husband or wife is going though. This will help them to have more compassion and empathy. It will also help them to remain calm and realize that they will get over this phase. Sometimes it is a case of breathing and taking a step back when you find that you are going through a lot of stress.

The relationship can't be based on the disorder. If this is the case, the couple won't enjoy their time together, and it will eventually lead to divorce. They need to spend some time apart. It is important that they have the space, especially when things are tough. The spouse is not there to take care of their husband or wife. They are basically a partner, but they also need their own life, offering some type of support.

Couples may find that anger is a problem. The spouse can be sensitive to this, and this is where it becomes a problem. People with bipolar also take a lot of risks. This often leads to problems with drugs and alcohol. It is just one more problem to deal with. They may have other addictions, such as gambling or eating disorders. Obsessive compulsive disorder can also crop up.

It is especially important to confront these issues when there are children involved, because they may be feeling the tension. Children will pick up on these feelings in the home. They will be very confused and they will also feel guilty, thinking that this is all their fault.
