The Necessary Primary Wine Making Supplies

By Ann West

Wines are types of alcoholic beverages that are made from grapes which are being fermented. The grapes are being fermented without any additional sugars, enzymes, acids, water, and some other nutrients. This is because the yeast will consume the sugars and converts it into carbon dioxide and ethanol. There are many different variations of yeast and grapes that also produce different variations of wines.

A wine also has many different kinds that are fermented by the use of some kind of cereals and fruits. A wine which is made of plant includes various types of the rice wines and the fruit wines which includes plums, cherries, and also pomegranate wines, elderberry wines, hard cider from the apples, and perry from the pears. Wine making supplies may also be used when making a home made beverage at home.

Vinification or usually called as winemaking is a type of process wherein the wines are being produced. The process starts from selecting the type of grape until it is being bottled as a finished product. Even if grapes are the most common ingredient for its production, other types of fruits and plants may also be used. A mead is a type of this beverage where in aside from water, honey is one main ingredient. Winemaking can be divided into 2 categories, still and sparkling production.

The following paragraphs is about the processes of production. The first process are the bringing of grapes to the winery after they are harvested. In the winery, these are prepared for primary fermentation. When fermenting, yeasts are added first or may occur either naturally or coming from air. Fermentation process usually lasts for up to 3 weeks.

After fermenting, these are being pumped into the tanks and skins will be pressed in order to extract the remaining juices. The pressed skins are then blended with free run wines depending on the winemaker. After, these will be kept warm and all the remaining sugars will be converted into carbon dioxide or alcohol.

Malo lactic conversion is the next step where in a bacterial process will occur. A malic acid is is converted to a lactic acid during the process. This conversion helps the softening of the taste. At times, these are placed in oak barrels for its maturity, thus, oak aromas and as well as tannin might be imparted.

The most popular type which is the Beaujolais nouveau would often take few months for up to twenty years starting from the harvesting of grapes up to its drinking. This makes it in a better structure containing high levels of tannin, acid, or sugar. In order to achieve the goals of the winemaker, all these steps may possibly be combined depending on the types of grape and the style to be used.

Many variations have been made that have similarities when it comes to quality, but it differs on the production. Its quality will more likely depend upon the attributes of materials and not on vinification steps. The champagne, which is an example of the sparkling type includes secondary fermentation and it is being performed after bottling.

Fermenting the sweet type happens before the sugar is converted into ethanol. Fermenting this is done through chilling, sulphur, and adding additives to remove yeast and bacteria. The sugar concentration is also increased.
